Honorary membership/Fellowship

The Society’s membership includes a small group awarded the distinction of Honorary Fellow or Honorary Life Fellow. The list of those scientists awarded Honorary Fellowship since the Society’s foundation says much about the strength of our organisation and our relationship with the best minds in the subject. Below are lists of our current and past Honorary Fellows and current Honorary Life Fellows, and what you need to do to nominate somebody for one of these signal honours.

Bye-laws relating to Honorary Fellowship

11(a) Honorary Fellows: Up to twenty persons may be elected to Honorary Fellowship; at the time of election they must be residing outside the British Isles or Channel Islands. They shall pay no annual subscriptions, and shall be entitled to every privilege accorded to Members including online access to the Society’s journals if they so wish.

11(b) Every candidate for Honorary Fellowship shall be proposed by two members of the Council, and election shall be by the Council, and shall be confirmed at the ensuing General Meeting by a majority of three-fourths of the members present and voting.

Make a nomination for an Honorary Fellow

At its first meeting each year, the Society’s Council will consider whether it is to seek nominations for one or more Honorary Fellows. If it is so agreed (bearing in mind the limit of 20), all Society members will be invited to make nominations before the date of the following November meeting of Council. Nomination ‘packages’ should include a letter outlining the candidate’s suitability and a copy of his/her curriculum vitae. Nominations approved by Council (having sought formal ‘proposals’ from two of its members) will go forward for ratification at the ensuing AGM, usually in March of the following year. The names of new Honorary Fellows will be announced in the Society pages of Elements and in the members’ E-Bulletin.

Bye-laws relating to Honorary Life Fellowship

10(a) Honorary Life Fellows: Up to ten members of the Society may be elected Honorary Life Fellows in recognition of their exceptional contribution to the furtherance of the aims of the Society. They shall pay no annual subscriptions, and shall be entitled to every privilege accorded to Members, including online access to the Society’s three journals if they so they wish.

10(b) Every candidate for Honorary Life Fellowship shall be proposed by four members of the Council, and the election shall be by the Council, and shall be confirmed at the ensuing General Meeting by a majority of three-fourths of the Members present and voting.

Make a nomination for an Honorary Life Fellow

At its April meeting each year, the Society’s Council will consider whether it is to seek nominations for one or more Honorary Life Fellows. Nomination ‘packages’ should include a letter outlining the candidate’s suitability and a copy of his/her curriculum vitae. Nominations approved by Council (having sought formal ‘proposals’ from four of its members) will go forward for ratification at the ensuing AGM.
