Metamorphic Studies Group 40th Anniversary Meeting

The annual Metamorphic Studies Group (MSG) Research in Progress (RiP) meeting, was held virtually over Zoom on three consecutive afternoons (GMT) on 29-31 March 2021.

The programme and abstract volume are available here.

2021 is the group’s 40th anniversary. The programme reflected this with a retrospective talk by Mike Brown, one of the founders of the group, and a peek at the future (and the past) by Roger Powell.

The best student poster award went to Stefania Corvò (Unravelling the evolution of a major extensional lower crust shear zone from Val d’Ossola (Ivrea-Verbano Zone, Western Alps, Italy); the best student oral presentation went to Sophie Miocevich (How did the Archean crust evolve? Insights from the structure and petrology of the Lewisian of Scotland) (with special mentions of Madeleine Murphy [The Si isotope composition of Archaean continental crust from ~3.8 Ga West Greenland rocks] and Andrea Maffeis [HP-UHP fluid inclusion evolution predicted by molecular and electrolytic fluid models: implications for HP-UHP metamorphic fluid composition])

Catherine Mottram prepared a montage of many of those who had been involved with or held leadership roles in the group since its foundation.

Videos of most presentations and of the EDI discussion are available  below:

The meeting included three keynote speakers to mark the occasion:

  • Dr Freya George, Johns Hopkins University, who discussed O-isotope records of heterogeneous fluid fluxing in HP melanges
  • Dr Bruna Carvalho, University of Padova, who discussed fluid-rock interactions in granulites
  • Dr Pierre Lanari, University of Bern, who discussed development of tools for compositional mapping and modelling (e.g. XMapTools)

In addition, Prof. Mike Brown (University of Maryland), who helped found MSG, gave a special invited talk on “A perspective on 40 years of advances in metamorphic geology” and Prof. Roger Powell gave the 2021 Barrow Award winner’s talk.

Registration was free of charge and >400 people from 38 countries signed up to attend.

There was also a panel discussion of Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity

How to be inclusive – big change or small steps?

The discussion was tailored towards EDI issues in the metamorphic community and will consist of a panel of volunteers from the community itself. The aim of the discussion is to raise awareness of and look at potential solutions to issues which are persistent in the Metamorphic community. Some of the most pertinent areas related to EDI in the metamorphic community include recruitment, conference and event planning, fieldwork and diversity. An overview of the recent survey undertaken by Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Geoscience (EDIG) was summarised by Anna Bidgood followed by a pre recorded talk by Anya Lawrence who talked about her research and fieldwork from an EDI perspective and what we can do to make fieldwork more inclusive.

The discussion covered topics such as the examples below:
· Why do we need to be inclusive and diverse?
· What is systematic or unconscious bias and why should we care?
· What can we as individuals and institutions do to make recruitment processes more equitable and diverse?
· How can we make fieldwork more accessible?
· How can you contribute to making events (online or virtual) more accessible?
· How to include a ‘global’ audience – perspectives outside of Europe

A report from the discussion, written by Stacy Phillips, is available here.

The committee is grateful to everyone who adhered to the code of conduct during the conference presentations and discussions. We value everyone’s participation during events and encourage interaction that is constructive and professionally stimulating. We remind everyone in the community that discussions and presentations should remain professional and focussed on the science. If we feel that the code of conduct has not been upheld, further action will be taken and recorded presentations will not be hosted on our website.
