Minerals and Microbes 2023: A joint research in progress meeting of the Environmental Mineralogy Group and the Geomicrobiology Network

The Environmental Mineralogy Group and the Geomicrobiology Network are hosting a joint Research in Progress meeting ‘Minerals and Microbes 2023’, at the Bernal Institute, University of Limerick, Ireland, on the 7–8th September 2023.

Registration and Conference Details

Attendance at the conference and the optional field trip are free of charge.

Research presentations will be held from 9am – 5pm on 7th September, with keynote talks from Prof. John D. Coates (UC Berkeley), and Dr Gina Kuippers (BRAIN Biotech AG) who will talk about her journey from an environmental mineralogy/geomicrobiology PhD to a role in industry.

There will be an optional and informal conference dinner in Limerick on the evening of 7th September (estimated cost €20–30).

Field Trip

On the 8th September there will be an optional social field trip to tour The Burren (https://burrenbeo.com/), one of Ireland’s most compelling landscapes (natural history, geology, ecology), and also home to Father Ted’s house.  The trip will depart from Limerick at 9am and return to Limerick by approximately 3pm. Please indicate during registration whether you would be interested in this trip. We will contact all those interested to confirm attendance on a first-come, first-served basis. The maximum number of attendees is 30. The costs of the trip are covered by the organisers, although you will be required to bring a packed lunch. Travel to Limerick and Accommodation

Details of accommodation close to the University of Limerick will be added here shortly.

Limerick can be reached from the UK by ferry or plane. The nearest airport is Shannon Airport, and there are direct coaches from Dublin Airport to Limerick.

There is a combined sail-rail ticket you can get from UK-Ireland from Irish Ferries or Stena. National Express has a number of options for travel from the UK (including London and Manchester) to Dublin if you have time for a leisurely journey . Travel from Dublin to Limerick via train or bus is very easy as they are well connected by public transport.
